Plenary Indulgence Granted to Members of the Militia of the Immaculata

In order to promote a greater esteem for plenary indulgences and to acquire them with right dipositions in accordance with the teachings of Pope Paul VI, the General Office of the MI by means of its Supreme Moderator requested the Holy See that its enrolled members be able to acquire a Plenary Indulgence on each of the following days:

1. On the day of their enrollment in the MI
2.
December 8: The solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
3.
February 11: The memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes
4.
March 25: The solemnity of the Annunication of the Lord
5.
May 13: The memorial of Our Lady of Fatima
6.
August 15: The solemnity of the Assumption of Mary
7.
October 4: The feast of St. Francis
8.
October 16: The anniversary of the founding of the MI

This request was granted on October 24, 1967; and further stipulated that in addition to the customary conditions for gaining the Indulgence (confession, Holy Communion, and an Our Father, Hail Mary or any other prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father), each one must renew on each of these days, at least privately, one's promise to observe faithfully the by-laws of the MI.

The Original Charter of the MI

The Original Charter of the MI (aka Knights of the Immaculata) movement given it by its Founder constitutes the basis of the international bylaws and the particular bylaws for the U.S. The text of this Charter reproduced in the second introductory section of the international bylaws is taken from the Italian text approved by the Vicariate of Rome, January 2, 1922. Following is the new English translation of
the Original Charter:

"She shall crush your head" (Gen. 3, 15) "You alone (Mary) have crushed all heresies in the whole world" (Office of the B.V.M.).

I. Purpose of the Knights. Pursue the conversion of every person caught up in sin, heresy, schism and especially Freemasonry, and the growth in holiness of all persons, under the sponsorship and through the meditation of the B.V.M. Immaculate.

II. Conditions for Membership. 1. Make a voluntary and total oblation of oneself to the B.V.M. Immaculate as an instrument in her most holy hands. 2. Carry or wear the "Miraculous Medal." Have one's name placed on the register of the Pious Union of Rome at the Primary Center, or at any canonically erected Affiliated Center.

III. Means of the Apostlate. 1. Offer insistently once a day, if possible, the ejaculatory prayer: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all those who do not have recourse to you, especially for the Freemasons"; 2. The use of all the legitimate means that one's particular state in life, condition and varying opportunities make possible, are entrusted to the zeal and prudence of each member, but especially propagating the "Miraculous Medal."

OBSEVATIONS 1. The means (under n. III) have only the force of counsel, not of law. 2. None of these means obliges under the pain of even the least sin. 3. Members are moved solely by an ardent love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in order that all souls may be led to him through the B.V.M. Immaculate.

All members of the MI, please renew your commitments to Mary and to her MI on the above mentioned feast day as follows.

"O Immaculata, on this the feast of , I, N. , renew my promise to you and to the MI to faithfully adhere to the Original Charter, the general bylaws, and those bylaws particular to the U.S."
